A Cinderella Story (2004)

Synopsis :

Sam Montgomery (Hilary Duff) lived a semi-fairytale life with her widowed father Hal (Whip Hubley) when she was 8 years old in a suburb in California. Later, her father opened up a Diner named after him and fell in love with a woman named Fiona (Jennifer Coolidge) who he later married. One day, a falling support beam kills her father in the 1994 Northridge earthquake and leaves her with her plastic-surgery/salmon-obsessed stepmother and her two cruel stepsisters Brianna (Madeline Zima) and Gabriella (Andrea Avery). Eight years later, Sam is a straight-A student enduring her uncaring stepmother's wrath, who turned her father's cafe into a hot-pink hot spot and forces her to work as a diner girl. In addition to her family, Sam must deal with the popular girls at school, particularly the head cheerleader, led by Shelby Cummings (Julie Gonzalo). Sam confides in her best friend Carter (Dan Byrd) and her cyberspace pen pal, who wants to attend Princeton University with her. What she doesn't know is that her secret admirer turns out to be Austin Ames (Chad Michael Murray), the quarterback of the football team and the most popular student at school who is currently dating Shelby, who is obsessed with being popular.

As they text each other back and forth, Austin invites Sam to the Halloween Dance so they can meet face to face. Austin dumps Shelby a few hours before the dance. At the same time, Fiona forces Sam to work late at the diner that night until midnight. Rhonda (Regina King), Sam's mentor and friend at the diner, and Carter help Sam get to the dance, masquerading as Cinderella in a mask and Rhonda's wedding dress. She meets Austin in the middle of the dance floor and is at first put off by the fact that her pen pal is Austin Ames himself. He soon wins her over, and they move outside together. As they dance outside in a gazebo, they play 'Ten Questions' with Sam never revealing her identity. Meanwhile, Carter, disguised as Zorro, saves Shelby from David (Brad Bufanda), one of Austin's friends, from making a move on her.

Right before Austin is about to take off Sam's mask, her cell phone alarm goes off 15 minutes before midnight, warning her to run back to the diner before she's caught. She leaves Austin before he can figure out who she is. Austin and Sam are chosen as the Homecoming Prince and Princess, but apparently Cinderella is playing hard to get. Sam manages to find Carter, and they flee from the dance. On the way out, Sam accidentally drops her cell phone (which fill the role of the glass slipper). Austin, who has been following her, picks it up, determined to find out who this Cinderella is.

Sam goes to school the next day to find Austin performing a school-wide search for his Cinderella. Sam is still feeling uncomfortable about revealing herself to Austin, who in turn is still searching obsessively. Sam tells Carter that if he tells Shelby he was her Zorro, she'll reveal herself to Austin. Carter agrees but after he tells Shelby, she rejects him. One afternoon, Sam's stepsisters find her emails while snooping around on her computer. After unsuccessfully trying to pass themselves off as Cinderella to Austin, they end up showing the emails to Shelby and her friends. The stepsisters make her believe Sam stole Austin on purpose, so she puts together a cruel skit to perform at a football pep rally in order to humiliate Sam. The skit is performed in front of the whole school, as well as Austin's father who is present at the pep rally and has been pressuring Austin to attend college to play football at USC, his alma mater. Austin has never told his father he really wants to attend Princeton.

Hurt and humiliated, Sam goes back home and Fiona brings her a letter from Princeton saying that she was rejected. This is, in actuality, a fake letter as Fiona and the stepsisters threw out the real acceptance letter from Princeton, most likely so she wouldn't leave the diner. The next day at the diner, Brianna and Gabriella slam the door so a guitar with a photo of Elvis falls down (which they blame on Sam), ripping off the wallpaper and exposing a quote: "Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game". Sam reads this aloud and decides she has had enough of her step-family and their abusive treatment. She quits working at the diner, tells Fiona that Fiona is through messing with her, and moves in with Rhonda, who, along with every other employee, also resigns. Because of this, all the customers leave early. The night of the big football game, Sam storms into the boys' locker room and confronts Austin, saying that she's fed up with his two different identities, one to her and one to his friends "Waiting for you is like waiting for rain in this drought, useless and disappointing". Carter meets up with her at the school, and invites Sam to attend the football game with him. During a break in the game, Shelby confidently tells her fellow cheerleaders that she and Austin will soon be back together. In the last few moments of the game, while the team is huddled up before their next play, Austin sees Sam leaving and abandons the game. As he is running off the field, his father grabs him and asks him what he is doing, throwing away his dream like that, to which Austin replies that he is, in fact, throwing away his father's dream. He makes up with Sam and kisses her in public, and everyone starts clapping for them, much to the consternation of Shelby and the stepsisters. At the very same time it starts raining. Also the Fighting Frogs win the game even without Austin playing.

In the final scenes of the movie, Sam finds her father's will hidden by Fiona. The will states that everything belongs to Sam. Sam uses this to sell Fiona's cars to pay for tuition and forces her and her step-sisters to work at her diner, under the watch of her new partner, Rhonda. Carter goes on to film a commercial and finally gets the girl, although the girl is not Shelby(who starts to flirt with him), but a cute pink haired punk girl who worked as a DJ and RJ in the college. Sam and Austin continue dating and both go to Princeton together.

Synopsis :

In a highly structured and bureaucratic state, the government has installed extreme and highly counterproductive measures for which to track down terrorists. A "bug" in the system mixes up the last name of a terrorist (Tuttle) and an innocent man (ironically enough Buttle). Thus, the wrong man (Buttle) is arrested and killed while Tuttle continues to roam free. Sam Lowry, an average man with a mother who "knows people", is assigned to investigate the error. At the same time, Jill layton, Buttle's neighbor, is trying to report the mistake to authorities. Due to the extremely inefficient bureaucracy, she finds the process to be very tedious. Meanwhile, Sam Lowry, who has been dreaming about Jill, gets sidetracked by his fantasies and ends up also being a victim of the counter productivity of the government.

Movie Review:
"Newtonin Moondram Vidhi", is the Tamil rendering of what is otherwise known as (Sir Isaac) Newton's Third Law (of motion), which states "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction."

In the movie actions are aplenty. It is a simple enough tale of vendetta - a lover's retribution for the murder of his fiancee.

But, what makes the whole thing interesting is the treatment of the subject that accords no moment to the audience to second-guess the script's twists and turns.

A television anchor Priya (Sayali Bhagat) is raped and murdered by her lecherous boss J.P. (Rajeev) on the eve of her marriage to a fashion designer Guru (S.J. Suryah) - completing the original "action" part.

Narrated in the flashback mode, the proceedings begin with Suryah sporting a grim expression laying a wreath on his girlfriend's grave.

The "equal and opposite reaction" begins in right earnest when Guru warns J.P. that he will be punished for his crime with a painful death.

The rest of the tale is all about the gory "execution" of the threat.

Credited with several thriller soaps for television, director Thaimuthuselvan does a commendable job of masterminding cinematographer Saravanan's frightening frames.

Dubbed Tamil filmdom's "sleaze slob" Suryah seems to have emerged from his self-imposed shadows.

Music director Vinay's apprenticeship under Oscar award winner A.R. Rahman and Harris Jeyaraj seem to have worked wonders.

So I can't understand the poor rating for this film, except to think it was marketed to the wrong people (by accident).

What this film is not... 1) A horror film. There are no scares, it's not a fright fest. It's not even really what I would term "gory". 2) This is not Evil Dead, or Shawn or the Dead, but more like Army of Darkness. 3) This is not a porn film, there is little nudity, but if you like to see hot ladies, barely clothed, then...

What this film is... 1) Pure camp and all out laughs 2) lots of action and hilarious special effects. 3) An amazing soundtrack even for a high budget A movie. 4) Non stop memorable scenes and one liners. Based on a lot of reviews from IMDb, critics, and other sites, it seems many who watched this film expected something quite different. To me it's a modern day comic masterpiece Cordon as Fletch and McGann as the Vicar were my favorite characters. The beautiful lead vampires played by Silvia and Vera were amazing and right there as well. The rest of the cast (Mathew and Myanna especially) were also great and did just what they needed to do.

This movie is fun sober or wasted. Enjoy either way just take things a little less seriously.

Michael Moore, possibly the most controversial director of all time. Even more controversial than him are his movies. His movies include a Sicko, Fahrenheit 9/11, Bowling for Columbine,etc. Each one attacking the CONSERVATIVE ideas.

Well he has put out a new movie. Capitalism:A Love Story. I saw this movie and I have to say it's fun, informative, Michael Moore doesn't have a 2 hour long boring movie, which the average joe wouldn't understand. He tells the movie like narrator and even is kind of comedic and then switches to serious in a couple of words. I loved this movie. I don't agree with him on some of the ideas. But I get what he's saying.

Very interesting movie. Even if you don't agree with him, you'll still be fascinated.

Jackie Chan has been known to audiences worldwide for his spectacular, comedic and stunt-filled martial arts. Well, now in this movie, Chan gets to show off acting chops as well, with a few kicks and punches thrown in as well.

The setting and story are surprisingly solid and well done. The movie paces along in a brisk pace (courtesy of director Derek Yee), and is gripping throughout. The cinematography is beautiful at times and gritty at others, showing Tokyo as a whole. And it's fun to see Japanese and Chinese spoken a lot in this film, really pulls you into the film further.

While the level of violence is the highest than any other Jackie Chan movie (there is graphic brutal violence in some action scenes), the total amount of violence is surprisingly little, with the majority of the film dealing with the characters' trials and tribulations. There are some fight sequences, but don't expect Chan to do his usual thing; at times he's down to earth and makes us genuinely feel for his character, at times he is directly brutal. This film is NOT for the easily disturbed.

The acting is above average. Chan delivers a standout performance, an illegal worker who tries to protect his kinsman by gaining respect by and protecting themselves from the Yakuza. Another great performance comes by Daniel Wu, a fellow immigrant who gets his innocence lost... the hard way. The two love interests and the detective also get props too.

For those of you expecting another Chan romp ala Rush Hour and Supercop, you may find yourself refreshed at Chan's sudden change of pace. For those who like crime dramas such as City of God, give this one a shot. This is definitely one of Chan's highest marks, and I hope to see more of the new, dramatic Chan in the future.

As the title suggests, ‘Detective Naani’ is a simple story about a granny (Ava Mukherjee) who has those intrinsic detective traits to her. She may not be trained like the CID officers she comes in contact with as the story progresses, and nor is she expected to be physically agile like youngsters.
Still, this 75-year-old lady has decades of experience behind her and a ’strong instinct’ factor that makes her see things that others may ignore.
This is where the film’s basic plot comes into the picture as ‘naani’ suspects something fishy going on in her neighbourhood. She has a strong reason to believe that children in her locality are going missing. But no one wants to believe her. Her approaching the cops too proves to be futile and it is left entirely to her to get her own team – a bunch of youngsters, her grandchildren and a few other friendly neighbourhood folks – together and solve the mystery.
But this journey to the bottom takes its own time and it does become a little tiring intermittently. All you want to know is the ‘what’, ‘who’, ‘where’ and ‘why’ behind the mysterious happenings but filmmaker Romilla Mukherjee brings in other Bollywood masala elements to overtly dramatise the affair.
However, as is a mandatory requirement of any suspense flick, the end should keep you interested in the proceedings and this is what happens in case of ‘Detective Naani’ as well. After a good beginning and an average middle portion, the last few reels manage to pull back the movie, saving it from being an entirely lame exercise.
What impresses most about the movie are the tricks that ‘naani’ applies to find the culprits. The clues that she detects to move a step ahead may not be the kind that one finds in the theory book, but they have a practical touch to them.
From the performance standpoint, the film was meant to be the ‘naani’ affair all the way and Ava Mukherjee doesn’t disappoint. Though a known face on the commercial circuit, she has been doing films only sparsely – she was earlier seen in ‘Darna Zaroori Hai’ and ‘Devdas’. ‘Detective Naani’ is the first time that she has been seen as a protagonist in a Bollywood flick.
Ankur Nayyar as the CID officer does quite well too though he comes with the disadvantage of appearing in a film where he primarily has a supporting role.
The film’s music is boring, though the background score is reasonably good.
It’s easy to dismiss a film based on just the title, genre and the star cast. The same applies to ‘Detective Naani’, which arrives sans any promotion, has unknown faces and isn’t quite forthcoming of its genre – is it comedy, a family film or a thriller?
But if one keeps all these aside and focuses just on the story and its execution, it’s not a bad watch at all. ‘Detective Naani’, which has first-timer Romilla Mukherjee taking up the multiple responsibilities of a producer, director, lyricist, composer and screenplay writer, isn’t the summer kiddie flick that you were waiting for.

The first thing that goes against this film is its title. Frankly, a title like ‘Morning Walk’ with a plot revolving around senior citizens, has every chance of alienating a large segment of the audience. Also, the film’s release is a little ill-timed. Arriving at theatres when there is a plethora of new releases, ‘Morning Walk’ can’t be expected to entice audiences enough.

What one gets to see is a tale that immediately reminds one of the 1980s. Of course the makers may argue that the emotions have remained the same for generations, let alone just a couple of decades.

But at the end of the day, audiences look for entertainment in whatever shape or format it is served. And that is not really the high point of ‘Morning Walk’.

What is further surprising is that the entire angle of Anupam Kher, his one-time beloved Sharmila Tagore and her daughter Nargis is straight out of a lesser known film called ‘Lovesongs – Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow’.

You can’t be blamed if you haven’t even heard about this English film starring Om Puri and Jaya Bachchan. It was one of films that did really badly in 2008.

That film too saw its lead protagonists accidentally meeting after decades with a revival of bond between them. The film was an exhausting tale that read like a chapter in the life of a woman who had seen major lows in her life and had come out mentally stronger.

In case of ‘Morning Walk’, the story is told from the point of view of a man. Yes, the storyline is predictable but it is the performances that keep the film afloat to an extent. Of course that’s something which is expected when a filmmaker manages to rope in veterans like Anupam Kher and Sharmila Tagore.

Meanwhile Divya Dutta, who plays Anupam Kher’s daughter-in-law, bags one of the meatiest roles of her career. Some of the better scenes in the film are reserved for her. As for Rajit Kapoor, a regular with Shyam Benegal, he plays his part of Kher’s son mechanically.

Shayan Munshi may not be the most pivotal part of ‘Morning Walk’ but thankfully perks up the proceedings every time he comes on screen. He carries forward his ‘Mr. Nice Boy’ image – something that he has built from his ‘Jhankaar Beats’ days.

Actress Nargis, whose claim to fame has been ‘Garam Masala’ opposite Akshay Kumar, settles down for a lesser part in ‘Morning Walk’.

All in all, the film is a regular family drama, something that may have worked 20 years back. But in today’s time when there are 100 entertainment channels airing 500 daily soaps with 80 percent of them taking a sneak-peak into a regular Indian household, it is expecting too much from audiences to step out of their living rooms and spend money to watch ‘Morning Walk’ in theatres.

Siddharth- The Prisoner

There’s a thin line that divides unconventional and experimental cinema. Siddharth- The Prisoner, directed by debutante Pryas Gupta, has an unconventional plotline, but what comes across is quite abstract. In fact, a film like Siddharth- The Prisoner is more suited for film festivals, not mainstream commercial platform.

Also, Pryas’s prayaas sounds interesting on paper, but is not even part interesting on celluloid.

Just released from prison, Siddharth [Rajat Kapoor], a once-famous writer, completes a new manuscript. He re-engages with the outside world, hoping that the new book will restore his reputation and reconcile him with his estranged wife Maya.

However, fate has other plans for Roy when his briefcase gets exchanged at a cyber cafe with a similar briefcase containing a large sum of money. Roy loses the only copy of his manuscript, while Mohan [Sachin Nayak], the cyber cafe manager, comes under pressure from his boss [Praddip Sagar] to recover the lost money.

Director Pryas Gupta devotes the entire first hour in introducing the handful of characters in the film. Ideally, a thriller — this one had the potential to be a riveting fare — should unfold at a feverish pace, but the story unfolds at a lethargic pace and worse, there’s not much movement in the story in the first hour. In fact, the first hour is too boring.

But the plot does move post intermission, more so towards the pre-climax when everyone starts double crossing the other. Sadly, the end ruins just about everything. What was Pryas wanting to say, lacks clarity. There may’ve been a message, but it doesn’t come across at all.

Besides, the screenplay leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The film begins with Rajat being released from prison, but the reasons that resulted in this celebrated writer being put behind bars remains a mystery till the end. Ditto for the failed relationship that she shares with his wife. Half-baked tracks. Also, Rajat’s about-turn in the penultimate moments looks weird.

The direction is below the mark, while the writing is bad. Ditto for the editing.

Rajat Kapoor doesn’t get much lines to deliver. Nor is he given an opportunity to display histrionics. He’s strictly okay. Sachin Nayak enacts his part convincingly. Praddip Sagar has his moments. Pradip Kabra is bland.

On the whole, Siddharth- The Prisoner is too abstract for Indian moviegoers. A disastrous fate awaits this film at the box-office.

Yet, 8 x 10 TASVEER goes wrong, horribly wrong. The concept is interesting. The atmosphere is perfect. The mystery deepens with each passing minute. Just when you thought that Kukunoor had pulled it off, a twist in the tale pulls the carpet off your feet. ‘Short Kut’ was not a bad film to begin with. It was probably a terrific idea for a comedy of misguided zeal – a hammy actor, Arshad Warsi, stealing a struggling scriptwriter Akshaye Khanna’s great plot and becoming a superstar.

But in the absence of motivated mirth, the comedy just plunges out of control and is navigated entirely by the comic capabilities of Arshad Warsi.

Arshad plays that nightmare of every entertainment industry… He can effortlessly go over the top while hamming.

‘Short Kut’ was probably an idea that got lost in translation. There are signs of sparkle that fizzle out as the film progresses. Where we expect a torrent of laughter we get a drizzle of mild humour.

Some interludes are no doubt funny…like when during shooting ’superstar’ Arshad keeps messing up his line, a cute assistant director finally rolls down by his feet and mumbles the lines in understudied sarcasm.

Where are more such moments in this melee of misapprehended mirth? Where are the satirical jibes at the workings of the Indian film industry that would have elevated the comedy into more than what it finally is? A truncated travesty with very little to recommend except some tongue-in-cheek digs at the cult of megalomaniacal stardom.

The film seems to have been made at a cut-price budget. Posh hotel rooms are suggested with labels pinned on hastily to doors that probably belong to a lodge. The Thai outdoors come on towards the end in a breathless and quite absurd climax on top of a bridge where a starlet falls to her death.

‘Short Kut’ works neither as burlesque nor high-action.

Ennui is often a poor replacement in the plot for episodic splendour. Arshad Warsi’s tongue-in-cheek performance as the cheesy superstar holds the plot together. But not long enough for us to forget that ‘Short Kut’ is trying to be funny when the characters are far from comfortable in the zany zone that they never quite own.

And what pray are Sanjay Dutt and Anil Kapoor doing in one of the tackiest item songs one has seen in recent times?

The makers of ‘Short Kut’ don’t even know how to spell ‘cut’ let alone cut the film into a shape that can be considered entertaining, let alone enticing.

I lived in England in the 60's when many of these actors were in their prime. Here they are 50 years later and still working. They're not a bit afraid to act or look their age. What a treat for us and what a treat for young Bill Milner to act with these greats of British film and theatre. Quite a change from "Intermission" for the director John Crowley, but also suitably paced for an older generation. Nice enjoyable film about an old codger and a young boy. Anne Marie Duff had a tiny part (the last scene) in "Notes on a Scandal" and a larger one in a recent Irish film called "Garage." Check it out for understated acting and writing. David Morrissey played one of the leads in the TV series "State of Play" which is now a film with Russell Crowe and Helen Mirren.

great documentary! The parents had 5boys + 2 girls and the film maker is the eldest. The documentary has lots of old family pix and family videos and you get to KNOW the family and their personalities. And you see them at their most vulnerable, bravest, craziest and most boredom too. (the troops LOVE the show watching CD's of "The OC")

We are not "in the business," though live in a suburb of LA. My sister Armine and I ventured over to Santa Monica 3rd St Promenade to attend the premiere of a limited (1 wk?) viewing of a must-see documentary... BROTHERS AT WAR.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED when it comes to your state.

Viewers in the Santa Monica, CA audience came from as far as Sacramento, San Diego, Pasadena and the 2 of us from Santa Clarita.

It's not being aired anywhere else. Can you believe, it's only opened in 50 cities in the entire USA. It orig opened near 6 US military bases.... and now starting to go into the civilian communities? Hey, we're lucky that it's in driving distance to most (within 1hr drive time).

You are involved in the lives of all the REAL LIFE characters in this documentary film. It's not a political film, bashing 1 side or the other. It was filmed between 2004-2006. It's a family opening up w/ family stories (7 kids), and many young soldiers & marines "in country" opening up (eventually) to a 30yr old documentary filmmaker ... searching... why his brothers are volunteering, why other troops are in the service? (You can only imagine the clapping going on in that theater at the end of the film)

Best of all, we lucked out that evening! There was a question / answer period following the 7pm movie premiere we attended: writer/director Jake Rademacher (the 3rd brother); award winning producer Norman Powell and Gary Sinese (known to most as Lt Dan from Forest Gump, starring in CSI-NY, and traveling the world to entertain our troops with his very talented professional band, The Lt Dan Band). There were even 2 of the troops that we saw in the documentary sitting in the audience as well. (More clapping and clapping) Even recommend by Roger Ebert in the Sun Times.

The Great Buck Howard" has a unconventional beginning, with coloured subtitles helping to get points across. It is a fun way to start a film, yet the rest of the film has a vastly different tone.The title character Buck Howard is an unpleasant and mean guy, and yet somehow he strikes a chord with the viewers. He makes me sympathise with his misfortunes, and feel sad that his amazing acts get overlooked by the public and the press. I wanted Buck Howard to succeed in his tricks, even though he is unpleasant to work with.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa continues to develop his expansive ability with the film medium. I do not know of any other filmmaker today who can shift so effectively and powerfully from low-budget genre films such as his J-horror 'Pulse', thrillers such as 'Cure' to his latest work 'Tokyo Sonata', a sensitive and touching examination of the modern Japanese (disfunctional) family. It deserves all the praise it gets. If you have not yet tried a Kiyoshi Kurosawa film, do so now and discover a contemporary master of cinema. If you desire understatement and enigma get hold of his works: 'Pulse', 'Charisma' and 'Barren Illusions' and his wonderful 'Bright Future', a study of youth, which has been compared to the films of Luis Bunuel. His enigmatic thriller 'Cure' rivals 'Seven' for its power. Even his made for television, short feature, 'House of Bugs' (you must excuse the title) has structural shifts that make any one interested in non-linear film-making sit up and take note. And 'Seance', another shorter feature made for television, displays an understanding of human relationships that linger long after the horror effects have faded. An understanding you can see in all his films and which he has brought to fruition in 'ToKyo Sonata'. He has used his prodigious production output (sometimes three films a year) to learn valuable lessons on how to make films that can touch you, scare you and leave you thinking long after you have finished the end credits. The only question about Kurosawa is:what will he do next?
